Vietnam spikers outplay HK
Vietnam flexed just enough muscle to outplay Hong Kong, 25-23, 25-17, 25-22, in the 15th Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championships on Tuesday at the San Andres Gym.
The Vietnamese, silver medalists in the 2007 Thailand Southeast Asian Games, needed only a little over an hour to dispatch the younger and smaller Hong Kong spikers to even their record to 1-1 in Pool C.
Vietnam was beaten by title favorite China in the typhoon-delayed opening last Monday, 14-25, 23-25, 14-25.
The loss was the third for Hong Kong which drew 10 kills from Yu Hing Lung.
Team captain Ngo Van Kieu and Nguyen Huu Ha conspired for Vietnam's dazzling attacks with 14 hits each.
Huu Ha and Giang Van Duc also provided the defensive effort for the team by combining for four blocks.
In the other match, Lebanon leaned on its height advantage to beat Maldives, 25-19, 25-13, 25-13 in only 52 minutes.
Showing no sign of ill effects following their 25-20, 25-18, 17-25, 25-23 loss to defending champion Australia last Sunday, the Lebanese started hot with Alain Saade leading the assault.
The Maldivians tried to get back into the contest in the second set but the Lebanese just proved too hot to stop. Their numerous errors also hastened to their defeat – their third in as many outings.
Saade led Lebanon with 13 hits. He was ably supported by Joseph Nohra and Jean Abi Chedid who struck heavily in the third.
Abdul Kareem Ahmed paced Maldives with 13 hits highlighted by two blocks.
