La Union says no to Baguio trash
AGOO, La Union — The relentless effort of the Baguio City government to convince other surrounding local governments to use their available lands, existing dumpsite, or controlled dump facility for its sanitary landfill continuous to suffer setback.
This developed as the municipal government here said it will not allow the city government to use its existing sanitary landfill facility as a dumping site for its over 300 tons of garbage being generated in its 128 barangays daily.
Mayor Sandra Y. Eriguel said they do not intend to allow Baguio City or their neighboring towns to dump their garbage in their landfill because the facility was designed to address their solid waste problems.
Agoo’s sanitary landfill facility is located in Barangay San Agustin, which is located along the stretch of Marcos Highway.
Eriguel said, two of the three huge sells of the facility are still undergoing installation in order for the landfill to be fully operational in the coming months in compliance to the provisions of Republic Act (RA) 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.
“We appeal to Baguio officials to spare us from their problem on garbage because our landfill is quite small and could only accommodate the solid waste generated by our constituents,” she stressed.
