Typhoon leaves 14 dead
BAGUIO CITY – Twelve persons were reported killed, two others injured and one missing while thousands of families were rendered homeless by the onslaught of Typhoon “Pepeng” in various parts of the Cordillera and the Bicol region starting last Saturday.
The Associated Press reported at least 16 people killed in the aftermath of Pepeng.
A report from the Cordillera Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (CRDCC) identified five of the fatalities of a landslide in Ampucao, Itogon, Benguet early Sunday morning as Ernesto Gabayno, 51, married and a native of Mankayan, Benguet; Alex Cadasa Rufino, 31, a native of Apayao province; Jeric Cadasa, 8, Jonie Cadasa, Jr., 10, Lanoy Cadasa.
Two other still unidentified males who were reportedly natives of Mayoyao, Ifugao also perished in the landslide.
Chief Supt. Orlando Pestano, director of the Police Regional Office (PRO) in the Cordillera and CRDCC chairman, said the victims were sleeping in their house along the Kias-Philex Road when a huge portion of a nearby mountain was washed down and buried them.
In Barangay Beckel, La Trinidad, Benguet, five individuals, including a one-year old child, were killed in another landslide late Saturday evening.
The victims were identified as Rustom Galbey, Zenia Galbey, their one-year old daughter Dafny, Catalina Tabora and Laruan Tabora.
In Bicol, those reported killed were identified as Roger Moreno of Naga City and two-year-old Edwin Domagsang of Baao, both in Camarines Sur. Domagsang reportedly drowned.
Those injured were Jun Pagasa, 54, a resident of Purok 5, Bulanao, Tabuk, Kalinga who reportedly slipped and fell to the ground while repairing the roof of their house, and Aldrin Tabor, a resident of Bakakeng, Baguio City who was a victim of a landslide in their barangay.
The report also identified the missing person as Jerico Rimando, 17, a resident of Camdas Subdivision, Baguio City who reportedly jumped off the creek near their place at the height of typhoon Pepeng.
Apayao province recorded 934 families composed of 3,483 individuals evacuated, while Kalinga evacuated 598 families composed of 2,735 individuals. Baguio City evacuated 108 families composed of 472 individuals, Abra moved 58 families composed of 290 individuals and Benguet moved 14 families composed of 62 individuals.
Pestano ordered all provincial disaster coordinating councils to immediately submit their respective damage reports.
The typhoon also downed power and communication lines in Apayao and Kalinga, isolating the two provinces.
