Bistek, Willie for QC mayor?
Two television and movie stars — Vice Mayor Herbert “Bistek’’ Bautista and “Wowowee’’ TV host Willie “Wil’’ Revillame — are poised to battle it out for the mayoral post of Quezon City, also known as “City of Stars,’’ in the 2010 national elections.
While both personalities have yet to make an official announcement on their political plans, sources said that “Bautista is 100 percent sure of running in next year’s elections while Revillame, about 70 percent.’’
They are expected to announce their political bid soonest as the filing of certificates of candidacy (CoCs) ends next month.
Sources also said that Bautista may run under the Liberal Party (LP), whose standard bearer is Senator Benigno “Noynoy’’ Aquino III. His running mate is Senator Manuel “Mar’’ Roxas II. Bautista’s running mate will be Councilor Jorge Bolet Banal Jr., they said.
If Revillame decides to run, his running mate will be Joy Belmonte, daughter of Mayor Feliciano “Sonny” R. Belmonte Jr., sources said. The concurrent mayor, whose term ends next year, is expected to run for Congress in the 2010 polls.
Sources said that the younger Belmonte has expressed her intention to join the Nacionalista Party (NP) whose standard bearer is Senator Manny Villar. The same sources said that Mayor Belmonte and Senator Villar are good friends.
Earlier, TV host Kris Aquino has urged Revillame to run for mayor of Quezon City on her showbiz oriented show “Showbiz News Ngayon (SNN)’’ aired over ABS-CBN recently. Aquino even said that she will support Revillame if he decides to run for mayor.
Revillame, the entertainment industry’s most influential personality, according to Yes! Magazine, has also earned the support of Villar. Both of them are business partners. But Bautista also claimed support from Aquino, the country’s top endorser.
Reports said that Aquino has told Bistek that she will support him in the 2010 elections, during the wake of her mother former President Corazon Aquino two months ago.
It will be the first time for Bautista to run for mayor of Quezon City. The first time he became vice mayor was during the term of then Mayor Ismael Mathay Jr. from 1995-1998. He became vice mayor again in 2001 up to the present. It will be the first time for Revillame to run for the city’s top post.
Rep. Mary Ann Susano, of the city’s 2nd district, is also expected to run for mayor, under the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) party. Her running mate will be Councilor Janet Malaya, of the 4th district, they said.
If Bautista finally joins the LP group, Rep. Nanette Castelo-Daza (4th district) will be the standard bearer of Lakas-Kampi-CMD for mayor in Quezon City, with running mate Councilor Bernadette Herrera-Dy, of the 1st district.
Other TV and movie personalities reportedly running in the 2010 national elections in Quezon City include actress Ara Mina, and actors Alfred Vargas and Dingdong Dantes. Another actress Councilor Aiko Melendez-Jickain will run for vice mayor of the city. So far, the actors have not announced their party affiliations.
Quezon City is the country’s richest, with a P9.8 billion tax collection in 2008. It is also the country’s most business-friendly.
