Argel Mendoza is making a strong statement for the Rookie of the Year plum in this year.

The sweet-shooting guard exploded for 29 points as Emilio Aguinaldo College got back at Arellano University, 86-81, on Monday in the 85th NCAA basketball at The Arena in San Juan City.

The 5-foot-10 Mendoza provided the spark the Generals needed in the final period, scoring eight points while getting some help from seldom-used Franz Chiong to avenge their 80-62 loss in the first round.

Holding a slim 81-79 lead with 43.2 second left, Mendoza, who is currently second in scoring with a 20.9 points norm per game, came through with a jumper and a charity while Chiong hit two pressure-packed charities down the stretch.

The win improved the Generals record to 6-11 for solo sixth.

In the second game, Angeles University Foundation Great Danes closed out their campaign in grand fashion, beating University of Perpetual Help Altas, 73-66, to snap a long 16-game losing skid.
