Roach to help ABAP
The Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) is getting help from the world of professional boxing.
While it is common knowledge that there is a huge difference in style and approach between amateur and professional, the ABAP is still going the extra mile in its rebuilding program.
Renowned trainer Freddie Roach, who is training Pacquiao in Baguio City, has expressed willingness to share his expertise, while Roach’s long-time disciple Buboy Fernandez and even Ken Porter, the father of one of Pacquiao’s sparmates, have confirmed their participation in the ABAP’ss program.
Roach, Fernandez, and Porter will be invited to observe the box-offs that the Abap is staging on Wednesday and Sunday at the People’s Park in the City of Pines.
Also expressing his desire to help is Nonito Donaire Sr., the father of current world super-fly king Nonito Jr.
The top performers in the box-offs should make the grade for a berth in the Philippine team that will compete in the 25th Southeast Asian Games in Laos this December.
In the Laos SEAG, each country can only field a maximum of six entries in the ten weight classes that have been penciled by the organizers in an effort to prevent one country from dominating the sport.
Called to participate in the box-offs include veterans Harry Tanamor and Joan Tipon, who will be joined by the equally-seasoned cast made up of Bill Vicera, Rey Saludar, Godfrey Castro, Delfin Boholst, Charly Suarez, Genebert Basadre, and Joegin Ladon.
There will also be 20 others taking part in the selection process.
