Bataan folks’ gains become setback for political critics
BALANGA CITY, Bataan – The series of successful legal battles of the Garcias in Bataan that resulted in hundreds of millions of pesos in economic benefits, employment, among others for Bataeños are also a severe political setback to their political opponents.
Among the landmark cases that Governor Enrique “Tet” Garcia and his son Rep. Abet S. Garcia (2nd District, Bataan) have won in legal battles were the putting up and retention of the Petrochemical Plant, now one of the income-generating firms in the province through its realty taxes and employment.
Known as Mr. Petrochem, then congressman Tet Garcia fought for the province’s right all the way to Supreme Court to establish the Petrochem Plant in Bataan. His political opponents, however, had favored the transfer and establishment of the Petrochem to Batangas, raising eyebrows among several sectors and earning the ire of Bataeños.
Garcia won the landmark case as the Supreme Court itself favored Garcia’s bid to have the Petrochem established in Bataan, despite the lobbying made by his political opponents to block the establishment of the Petrochem in Bataan.
It is now clear to the people of Bataan that the putting up of the Petrochem plant in Bataan is a major political breakthrough of the Garcias and a severe political setback to their political foes.
