Willie, Kris defend charity work for poor
TV hosts Willie Revillame and Kris Aquino, supporters of different presidentiables, hit detractors who claimed early campaign in their charitable activities nationwide.
On separate occasions, the popular TV personalities defended their activities last Sunday, saying they only wanted to help the poor through their various programs and projects.
“Hindi po kami nangangampanya. Gusto lang po namin makatulong sa mahihirap kaya po namin ito ginagawa,’’
Revillame said, at the launch of “Wowowee! Namamasko po’’ held at the jampacked Dasmariñas National High School in Cavite last Sunday night. Some 100,000 people attended the event, police said.
Revillame, the country’s most influential personality, according to Yes! Magazine, said that he suggested to Senator Villar to help the poor through his top-rating noontime show “Wowowee’’ aired daily over ABS-CBN, to which the senator agreed.
Villar and Revillame said that they have been going to places hit-hard by the recent weather disturbances to distribute relief goods. “Non-stop po kaming tumutulong sa lahat sa abot ng aming makakaya. Lilibutin namin ang buong bansa para makatulong sa lahat.’’ (We’re helping the poor non-stop).
Asked why he chose Revillame to help him in his pro-poor activities, Villar said: “May pusong masa si Willie kaya s’ya ang napili ko para sa aking programa para sa mahihirap.’’ (Willie has the heart for the mass, that’s why I chose him to help me in my programs for the poor).
Villar was also asked if he encouraged Revillame to run in 2010 elections. The senator said: “Siguro sya na lamang ang tanungin natin tungkol d’yan.’’
Revillame told the crowd to support the various programs of Villar. But he said that he will not run in 2010. “Hindi po ako tatakbo. Ako lang po ang magiging tulay ng mahihirap kay Senator Villar.’’
Villar also said that he was hurt when Boy Abunda, a long-time friend of the Nacionalista Party (NP), left them to support Senator Benigno “Noynoy’’ Aquino III, brother of Kris Aquino. “Masakit din pero nauunawaan namin ang lahat. Pero kaibigan pa rin namin s’ya.’’ (It hurts but we understand the situation. He is still a friend).
But organizers of the “Wowowee’’ show decided to stop the game portion of the show when the audience started to get unruly. Despite the presence of policemen, security men and first-aid personnel, Villar and Revillame decided to skip the game portion for the safety of the people.
Instead, Revillame sang several songs as he toured the football field. His staff members also gave jackets and cash to the audience. Other guests in the show were Camille and Mark Villar, children of Senator Villar; singers Rico J. Puno, Jessa Zaragosa, Mae Rivera, Andrew E., Blakdyak, Alynna, and Selena Gomez.
Also, Kris Aquino criticized text messages which said that she has been using Star Magic artists in campaigning for her brother.
“Maingat na po ako ngayon sa pagsasalita tungkol sa brother ko at kay Mar Roxas, pero hindi ko po ginagamit ang charity sa campaign ng kapatid ko,’’ Aquino said, in her showbiz-oriented show “The Buzz.’’ It was also co-hosted by Abunda and Ruffa Gutierrez.
Aquino has called on detractors to help the poor, instead of sending malicious text messages. It was reported that tickets for the Star Magic Charity Show for “Ondoy’’ victims also state that the program will support the candidacy of Noynoy and Mar for the 2010 elections.
“Gusto lang namin tumulong sa mga tao na nasalanta ng bagyo, na naging supporter din ng parents ko. This is my way of helping them,’’ said Aquino, youngest child of former President Aquino and Senator Benigno “Ninoy’’ Aquino Jr.
