6 p.m. — Lyceum vs UST

Adamson University pounced on the erratic plays of Lyceum in the deciding fifth set as the Lady Falcons foiled the upset bid of the Lady Pirates, 25-20, 13-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-13, in the sixth Shakey’s V-League on Tuesday at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Lady Pirates committed eight errors in the crucial set that allowed the Lady Falcons to wipe out a 2-5 deficit and notch their first win in two games. They dropped their opening-game assignment against University of Santo Tomas last Sunday.

So intense and fierce was their match, the Lady Falcons needed almost two hours to seal the win.

A three-man block by Adamson shattered the last tie at 13-all before Paulina Soriano came through with a power kill off the outstretched arms Syvie Artates that all but settled the issue.

Despite their 25-18, 17-25, 25-17, 25-16 setback to UST, the Lady Falcons started hot, taking the opening set, 25-20, behind the efforts of Soriano and Jill Gustill who dazzled the crowd with their power spikes.

In the second game, Ateneo flexed just enough muscle to thump University of the Philippines, 25-23, 25-13, 25-13, and jumpstart its bid for its first-ever title in the league.

Guest player Charo Soriano led the Lady Eagles’ assault with 13 hits while Cara Acevedo provided the needed support with 12 for Ateneo, which extended  UP’s losing run to 9 since joining the league last conference.

Soriano paced the Lady Falcons with 16 hits and four blocks while Gustill added 13, including 11 on kills.

Despite the win, Adamson mentor Dulce Pante was from being satisfied.

“I did not expect to win in five sets. This is not the way we should play. Akala ko straight sets ito,” Pante said. “We still need a lot of adjustments and blending.”

The Lady Falcons were nowhere near the form that gave them the third place trophy last conference against Far Eastern University.

“We we’re not able to practice for almost two weeks because of typhoon Ondoy. Wala kaming gym, sira pa rin dahil sa baha. We tried to look for other venues but to no avail,” Pante said.
