The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) is closely monitoring two weather disturbances near the Philippine archipelago.

As of 11 a.m. on Thursday, the weather bureau's advisory noted a tropical depression brewing over the Marianas Islands (1,870 kilometers east of Visayas) carrying maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers/hour (kph), and heading west northwest towards central and northern Luzon-Taiwan area at a speed of 35 kph. The said weather system, according to Pagasa, may intensify further and is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility this weekend.

Also, Pagasa noted a Low Pressure Area (LPA) spotted at approximately 370 km. northwest of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, embedded in an Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) that is continually bringing cloudy skies, scattered rainshowers, and thunderstorms over the Luzon and Visayas regions, respectively.

Two weather disturbances — "Ondoy" (international codename "Ketsana") and "Pepeng" (intenational codename "Parma") — devastated the country during the previous weeks, killing a total of 712 people from various parts of Metro Manila, Rizal, Laguna, and the Cordillera region, while also bringing damage worth of P18.4 billion to the agricultural sector.  The two weather catastrophes affected a combined number of 6,866,800 persons, according to figures released by the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).
