MANDAUE CITY — Forward Taguig and the Quezon Red Oilers hacked out impressive wins as action began in the Smart Liga Pilipinas Conference III Mandaue City Leg Wednesday at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Center here.

The Red Oilers of Gov. Raffy Nantes and coach Oliver Bunyi spoiled the home debut of Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue of Joe Soberano and Coach Jun Tan in the featured game, 79-66.

The Red Oilers’ win came after Forward Taguig of Mayor Freddie Tinga and coach Bing Victoria toyed with the Zamboanga Uno Latinos of coach Ronald Rico, 112-85.

Angelus Raymundo, the MVP of the General Santos City Leg won by the Red Oilers three weeks ago, continued his fine play with a team-best 15 points and nine rebounds. He was supported by Ramsey Williams with 12 points and three assists.

John Paul Alcaraz led Mandaue with 14 markers and four assists followed by Jerome Cenita with 13, the only players in twin digits for the hosts.

In the first game, new recruit Jeffrey Sanders showed the way for Taguig with 18 points on top of nine rebounds. Lou Gatumbato also had 18 points along with nine assists.

Charleston Bolias paced the Latinos with 22 points followed by Christopher Concepcion with 21.

The one point earned for the win now puts Taguig in a tie with the defending National Champion Misamis Oriental Meteors at 26 points for the second outright berth in next month’s five-team Super Leg that will determine the league’s next National Champion.
