Epi Quizon hopes to elude his niche

Although Epi Quizon feels the public already knows him as an actor who takes on a wide range of roles, he hopes not to find his niche "so I'll be forever searching for it."

“I want to be versatile in any form of acting,” he told Manila Bulletin Entertainment Online in a recent interview.

“I love the craft. I love what I do. Hindi naman ako leading man na naba-brand na masisira ang career [if I act totally offbeat]. Even my choice of a career path is offbeat.

“Some roles you see me [and you’d go] ‘Bakit n’ya ginagawa ‘yan? Bakit s’ya mukhang tanga d’yan sa role na ‘yan?' Then suddenly biglang magpapatawa, biglang mabait---tapos pumapatay pala ng tao.”

Epi, whose first few films in the ‘90s were with his father, Comedy King Dolphy, has come into his own as an actor.

His first role which garnered much acclaim was as the young version of his dad’s lead character in 2000’s “Markova: Comfort Gay.” He got to spread his wings even more when he forayed into the indie scene via Jon Red’s 2002 film, “Utang ni Tatang.”

Epi continues to make a mark on mainstream TV and cinema. He is in the cast of Richard Gutierrez’s forthcoming show, “Full House,” and in the Dolphy-Willie Revillame starrer, “Juan,” where he again plays the young version of his dad.

“I don’t classify any film – independent ‘yan or big studio – a film is a film whether ginawa mo [sa halaga] ng limang libo o limang milyon,” said he.

Nonetheless, Epi considers “Utang ni Tatang” a memorable indie film because, he said, it was where his professional and personal relationships with the movie’s director, Jon Red, and co-stars Joel Torre and Ronnie Lazaro began.

They reunite in “Ang Beerhouse,” an entry to the Digital Lokal Competition of the 11th Cinemanila that will premiere on Oct. 18 at the Cinema 6 of Market! Market! in Taguig City.

This time, though, Joel and Ronnie worked behind the scenes as producers while Epi and Ryan Eigenmann played the lead roles.

“This is so real! Pinoy na Pinoy. Alam mo ‘yun, kalyeng-kalye ang ugali,” he remarked on his latest film project that brings to life what’s going on in a typical beerhouse.

“Yeah,” he replied when asked if he’s been to a beerhouse. “It’s a Pinoy thing. Some have never tried it but I have.”

Epi recalled having a great time working with his friends. “Tawanan lang but of course ‘pag trabaho we have to focus. Nakakahiya kasi magagaling na artista ang kasabay mo so mahirap sumablay.”
