TABUK, Kalinga — The provincial government here has completed a P36-million El Niño mitigation plan to help the thousands of farmers cope with the serious negative effects of the expected drought in the coming months.

Based on the listing submitted by Gov. Floydelia R. Diasen to the Department of Agriculture (DA) for consideration in the funding of priority projects next year, the important projects which must be implemented in the different parts of the province include small water impounding projects (SWIPs) worth P15 million; diversion dams, P14 million; small farm reservoirs, P4.5 million; wind resource irrigation program, P1 million; and gravity technology resource base irrigation project, P1.5 million.

The national government has started to identify numerous projects in the countryside which could help mitigate the negative effects of the expected long dry spell to be brought by the El Niño phenomenon which is expected to hit the country next year.

During the previous El Niño phenomenon which struck the country over the past several years, the long dry spell previously experienced by thousands of farmers in various parts of the country has tremendously affected the country’s food security and requirement which forced the national government to import food from other parts of the global village.
