No Filipino casualties were reported in the twin earthquakes that jolted Indonesia on Friday, the Philippine envoy to the Southeast Asian archipelago said.

“So far there has been no news of injured Filipinos in the earthquake that hit Java,” Philippine Ambassador to Indonesia Vidal Querol said on Saturday, referring to one of the principal islands of the country.

A 6.3-magnitude quake hit the heavily populated island of Java at 6 p.m. Friday (Philippine time), with tremors reaching the capital city of Jakarta.

“We felt it here in Jakarta but it wasn’t that strong,” said Querol, adding that the ground-shaking lasted for around 15 seconds.

There are 7,000 Filipinos living in Java, the envoy said.

A quake which measured 6.1 on the Richter scale occurred in the island of Sulawesi earlier Friday.

Fortunately, no Filipino casualties or fatalities were reported.

Some 1,115 people were reported killed in the magnitude-7.6 quake that hit Sumatra last September 30.

At least 500 homes and buildings were either destroyed or damaged in the September 30 quake, which also spared Filipinos from harm. (Ellson Quismorio)
