Health drive benefits 7,000 in Butuan

BUTUAN CITY – More than 7,000 residents benefited from the weeklong health activities conducted by the city government here at various villages, particularly in the far-flung villages, this was learned on Saturday.

The seven-day barangay health activity that started last Sunday up to Saturday benefited 2,977 persons who availed of “free medical/dental” services and various kinds of medicines from the City Health Office with an estimated budget allocation of P50,000 for medicines per village.

The city government spearheaded by Mayor Democrito Plaza and his wife former Mayor Daisy Plaza, along with other city officials, also served 4,309 children under the Milk Feeding Program from the City Nutrition Office that amounted to P34,720.

On the other hand, at least 14 couples who had been living together were officially married by Plaza at the villages of Florida and Sumile while 70 indigents received 10 G. I. Sheets each from the City Planning office as part of the Housing Repair Program of the city government.

The City Veterinarian’s Office conducted anti-rabies vaccination and de-worming of animals, while the City Agriculturist’s distributed vegetable seeds.

A number of haggard looking farmers experienced relaxation and therapeutic free massage from the expert masseurs from the Butuan City Manpower Training Center.

The health program, which is part of the 10-point agenda of the city government, also diagnosed and treated 98 patients at their Geriacare-Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Center and performed major surgery on six patients with cataract at the Butuan Medical Center, while two were operated at the Butuan Doctors’ Hospital using Phacoemulsification cataract surgery.

All major surgeries were performed by Dr. Maria Theresa V. Heyrosa, city’s Eye Program Consultant, which is headed and managed by Councilor Randolph Plaza.
