Ledge dancing perks up MassKara festival

A ledge dancing competition was held in Bacolod City’s Lacson St. as part of the Electric MassKara festival held over the weekend in the Negros Occidental provincial capital.
Seven teams from different barangays participated in the festival. Each team was composed of 15 to 20 members clad in black outfits which were complemented by elaborate accessories.
The traditional MassKara masks worn by the participants were equipped with tiny multi-colored light bulbs powered by a battery switch.
One of the participants disclosed that the masks are made by professionals to ensure safety upon human contact.
The dance teams performed on various ledges installed along the stretch of Lacson Street.
Tourists and locals alike joined in on the fun by dancing to party music, participating in face-painting sessions, among other activities.
Judges were given time to evaluate and make their choices as the dance numbers came to a halt.
Barangay Team Estefania was proclaimed grand champion. Other teams who participated in the ledge dancing contest, particularly the 2nd and 3rd place runner-ups were given merit and special awards. An encore performance was done by the winners last night.
The event served to make Bacolod City’s third annual Electric MassKara, which consisted of concerts and street parties for three nights, even more colorful and festive.
Bacolod City is currently celebrating 30 years of the MassKara festival.
The festivities began last October 1 and will end on the City’s official Charter Day on October 19.
