GMA urged to act on Sulu bombing
Many Muslims in the Philippines may have not forgotten yet the government’s Eid’l Fitr Day bombing incident last September 20 in Indanan, Sulu, as they appealed to President Arroyo to punish those responsible for alleged violations of religious freedom enshrined under the Constitution.
This was learned Monday by the Manila Bulletin from the loosely organized Muslim Inter-Organizational Meeting (MIOM), composed of Moro civil society groups.
Ali Reza Kunting of the MIOM said copies of the letter were distributed to at least two mosques in Greenhills in San Juan, and Tandang Sora in Quezon City, for signing.
Kunting said the letter will then be forwarded to the President for her appropriate action.
Officials of the Muslim Legal Assistance Foundation (MUSLAF) headed by its president Carim Panumpang assisted in the preparation of the letter.
Part of the letter points to the freedom of religion in the Revised Penal Code and the Bill of Rights in the Constitution, which both assure the unhampered exercise of religious practices.
Disrupting religious practices is punishable under the Revised Penal Code, said lawyer Musa Malayang, a MUSLAF officer.
