RP jins’ campaign ends in tatters
Criselda Roxas lost her second round bout and the Philippine taekwondo team suffered another medal shutout as the 2009 world taekwondo championships ended Sunday night at the Ballerup Super Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Roxas edged Venera Abdurazakova of Uzbekistan, 6-3, in the opening round of the lightweight division but stumbled against Taiwan’s Chang Chueh, 9-5, in her next appearance.
Lim Su-jeong of South Korea eventually won the gold medal over China’s Zhang Hua, 10-8.
Roxas was the team’s final hope after 11 of her teammates bowed out of contention one after another.
Kirstie Alora emerged as the best Filipino finisher by reaching the middleweight division quarterfinals.
Featherweight Jeffrey Figueroa and finweight Japoy Lizardo made it to the round of 16, while the rest of the squad either crashed in the opening or second round bouts.
The RP team wound up 25th in the women’s division and 36th in the men’s.
