Ryan Eigenmann just might quit showbiz
Ryan Eigenmann, who plays one of the lead roles in the movie, “Ang Beerhouse,” may one day just quit show business like his father, veteran actor Michael de Mesa, who now holds down an office job in the U.S.
“I think he’s taking a long, well-deserved break,” Ryan said of his dad whose own father, Eddie Mesa, has likewise made a mark in the entertainment industry along with his mother Rosemarie Gil and his siblings Mark and Cherie Gil.
“To be honest, kaya maraming lumalabas na digital movie ngayon is because the industry is not doing good. It’s going down the drain,” he told Manila Bulletin Entertainment Online during the Oct. 18 premiere of his new movie directed by Jon Red and produced by his fellow actors Joel Torre and Ronnie Lazaro.
“So, yeah, I do see myself packing up and going later, saying, ‘Laters!’”
Ryan added: “This (career in show business) is not forever. At the rate things are going, malapit nang sirain ng industriya ang industriya. I mean ‘di ba, the reality is the industry is slowly killing itself. Piracy is rampant so this won’t be here forever. It’s time to look for something new para may fallback ka kahit paano.”
Even his mom, esteemed actress Gina Alajar, has the same sentiment, revealed Ryan. “Tanungin mo s’ya, (she’ll tell you that) acting is not forever that’s why we have to look for something that we can fall back on when this is all over and done with. And we’re not getting any younger,” he pointed out.
Meantime, Ryan is enjoying his job of giving life to characters on TV and in the movies. His role in “Ang Beerhouse” was extra fun for him because he’s playing a good guy for a change while Epi Quizon takes on the role of the antagonist as usual.
Ryan described the movie’s shoot as one long gimik as beer flowed on the set as early as 7 o’clock in the morning until they finished late at night. No wonder the actors looked naturally inebriated in the film about life in a typical beerhouse and the lives that revolve around it.
“I just hope people will like it. At these times na puro disaster, kailangan ng konting pampasaya sa tao,” he said, noting that the comedic touches in the movie subtly comment on society in general.
On TV, Ryan continues to be a contravida to matinee idol Gerald Anderson on Channel 2’s “Agimat Presents Tiagong Akyat.”
“I guess nakilala na ako as a character actor. It’s fine. Parati namang nagbabago ang bida pero ako pa rin ang kalaban nila,” he said.
In contrast, his younger brother Geoff Eigenmann is the romantic leading man on the soap opera, “Rosalinda.”
Ryan shared that he’s happy for and supportive of Geoff just like with their mom Gina, who’s competing in GMA-7’s “Celebrity Duets 3.”
