Many evacuees home as Pasig floods subside
From the almost 1,500 families relocated from different evacuation centers in Pasig City, many had left and only around 440 families were staying at the Philippine Institute of Sports Complex (formerly ULTRA) and Kapitolyo Evacuation Center as of Wednesday afternoon, Pasig City Mayor Bobby Eusebio said on Thursday.
He said floodwaters in different areas of the city have already subsided, prompting many families to return to their respective homes.
"If we are to follow what the MMDA said, we will have to wait three months for it to subside naturally. So what we did is we bought several pumps and pumped out the flood water from the affected areas," Eusebio said.
He also said the water level of the Pasig River remains high. Areas, namely barangays Pinagbuhatan, Bambang, Kalawaan, and Sumilang are still flooded with waters measuring around 12 inches high.
The local government also reported that Pasig City has one of the lowest cases of leptospirosis. Recent reports from the City Health department tallied 10 cases as of Wednesday, and only seven deaths.
"A few days after the floods occurred, we were able to put up several footbridges as part of our extensive preparation. We've also placed warning signs to disseminate information about the consequences of braving floodwaters.
I think that, including the anti-tetanus vaccinations and the distribution of our own first aid kit ('combi-pack'), prevented the development of diseases among Pasigueños," Eusebio said.
As of October 15, Quezon City tops the cities in Metro Manila with leptospirosis cases with its more than 122 cases, followed by Marikina with 82 cases.
