Journey frontman Arnel Pineda rocked the 11th Cinemanila Awards Night held on Oct. 23 at the NBC Tent of The Fort in Taguig City with a string of hits by Styx, Queen and Bon Jovi.

The audience asked for more but Arnel, who’s in the country to do a couple of benefit shows for typhoon victims, wisely wrapped up his mini-concert.

After all, the evening belonged to the winners of various competitions included in the international film festival founded by director Tikoy Aguiluz 11 years ago and co-chaired this year by Kaye Tinga, wife of Taguig City mayor Freddie Tinga.

“Anacbanua” was chosen Digital Lokal Lino Grand Prize while its director, Christopher Gozum, was named the best among five other contenders. The movie’s lead actress Che Ramos and cinematographer Joni Gutierrez accepted the bulol trophies on behalf of Gozum, an OFW in Saudi Arabia.

The Digital Lokal Lino Grand Jury Prize, on the other hand, was awarded to “Biyaheng Lupa,” the first directorial job of esteemed scriptwriter Armando “Bing” Lao and produced by Quantum.

In the Main Competition, which is comprised of foreign films, Sergey Dvortsevoy’s “Tulpan” won the Grand Jury Prize, Steve McQueen’s “Hunger” the Grand Prize Lino Brocka Award, Alfredo Castro of Chile’s “Tony Manero” as best actor, and Tsilla Chelton as best actress for Spain and Peru’s co-production, “Pandora’s Box.”

The SEA (or Southeast Asia) Competition honored “Focal Point” by Malaysians Alizera Khatami and Ali Seifourri as Best Sea Short Film, “Talentime” by Yasmin Ahmad as Best Sea Film, and “Woman on Fire Looks for Water” by Woo Ming Jin with a special mention.

The two awards under the Young Cinema Competition went to “To Siomai Love” as Best Short Film and its director, Remton Siega Zuasola, the Ishmael Bernal Award for Most Outstanding Young Filipino Filmmaker.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred to American writer-director Paul Schrader, who gave a Master Class in screenwriting and premiered his new film, “Adam Resurrected,” during the 10-day film festival.

Another special citation, the Indie Spirit Award, was given to Lav Diaz in recognition of “his unwavering and steadfast commitment to independent cinema” as exemplified by his films like “Batang West Side” and “Ebolusyon ng Isang Pamilyang Pilipino.”

Cinemanila will close today, Oct. 25, with Raymond Red’s “Himapapawid” at Cinema 6 of Market! Market!
