Mayor orders crackdown on erring drivers
DAVAO CITY (PNA) – City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte ordered the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) here to penalize taxi cab drivers who do not have identification cards (IDs) inside their vehicles effective next month.
LTFRB administrative officer Edgar Violan said taxi units with no driver IDs displayed will also be prohibited to operate starting next month.
Violan said free IDs were issued to taxi drivers as one of the three activities conducted last Saturday at the Agro field in Ecoland.
The other activities included a brief reorientation activity on road safety, photo session for free IDs provided by the government to public utility vehicles and the launching of the “Drive Carefully Stickers.”
Violan said the requirement for IDs of taxi drivers was already implemented in 2006.
“Now, upon the request of both taxi and jeepney drivers to have IDs, we were able to get assistance from the city mayor and the City Planning Office. This is free, from picture taking to providing slings,” Violan said.
He said Duterte wanted this requirement implemented soon since the holidays are approaching.
Meanwhile, the “Drive Carefully Stickers” will be implemented starting this week, Violan said.
“This is plain white, 2x4 sticker, to be placed in all vehicles at the windshield under the LTO (Land Transportation Office) sticker. This will serve as a reminder to all motorists on road safety,” Violan said.
