BAGUIO CITY — The Cordillera office of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) here has identified 26 landslide-prone areas in the region.

This was learned Tuesday after local governments in this mountain resort city and nearby Benguet were furnished copies of geohazard maps that identified landslide-prone areas.

To caution residents, the agency also placed warning signs in four different spots around Benguet to inform the people and residents that such areas are susceptible to landslides.

Based on the MGB-CAR’s geohazard map, landslide-prone areas in Baguio are portions of Dontogan, Qurino Hill, Holyghost, BGH Compound, Balsigan, Fil-Am barangay, City Camp Central, Camp 8, Middle Quezon Hill, Upper Quezon Hill, San Carlos Heights, Victoria Village, Lourdes proper, Lower Lourdes, Lourdes Extension, Middle Rock Quarry, Upper Rock Quarry, Mirador Hill-Dominican, and Honeymoon.

In Benguet, the landslide-prone areas are portions of Dangsey, Beto, Balite and Puguis in La Trinidad, and some parts of Mankayan, Shilan, and Atok.

MGB-CAR officials said the geohazard mapping of the whole Cordillera will be completed by next year and it would show more detailed scaling and specific portions prone to landslides so that people who want to construct their houses will be guided accordingly.

However, the national government and concerned local governments are being faced with social concerns and problems of relocation sites relative to the thousands of residents to be displaced from the areas where their structures are currently erected.

Earlier, the MGB-CAR disclosed that 85 percent of the region’s land area is considered to be highly susceptible to landslides, thus, people wanting to build their structures in the different places must ensure that they adopt appropriate engineering measures to ensure that they will be spared from whatever untoward incident in the future which will be triggered by natural calamities.
