CEBU CITY – A local business group here reiterates its advocacies in uplifting Cebu’s business community, especially concerning the looming problem of corruption that is allegedly not only present in government agencies but even in the private companies.

“Corruption is not confined to government but the private sector as well. Thus we urge the private sector to be guided by the principles of good governance at all times in carrying on their trade,” Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) president Samuel Chioson said.

City Mayor Tomas Osmeña earlier encouraged members of CCCI that other than pushing for investment promotions to Cebu, the chamber should also be more active in its advocacy relating to corruption and extortion.

“You have to develop a reputation to stand up for what is right and what is good for the community,” Osmeña said.

In addition, the mayor challenged the chamber to develop an active stand on different business-related issues concerning the entire Cebu business community.

“CCCI can play an important role in advocating against corrupt practices. I can’t always be the eyes and ears everywhere,” Osmeña added.

“To date, we are still vigilant over the developments of cases involving corruption and will support all moves that affirm transparency, accountability and honesty in conducting the affairs of the state,” said Chioson in an interview.

Chioson likewise mentioned the importance of empowering businessmen and entrepreneurs in the countryside to participate in the overall socio-economic development of their localities.

He said the chamber will focus on organizing Local Business Councils in the municipalities and component cities of Cebu.
