Two separate explosions caused by improvised explosive device (IED) rocked Quezon City and Pasig City on Friday.

An IED exploded before dawn Friday inside a condominium building in Quezon City where a bomb was also found last June. In Pasig City, a pillbox exploded at a plantbox in front of the Union Bank Plaza Towers along Meralco Avenue.

Inspector Arnulfo Franco, chief of the Explosives and Ordnance Division of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD-EOD), said that the bomb exploded at 1 a.m. on Friday inside the One Burgundy Plaza located along Katipunan Avenue, Loyola Heights.

Franco cited that last June a bomb, made up of military grade C-4 plastic explosive, was also found in front of the same building within several days after a bomb was found at the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the explosion of the Office of the Ombudsman.

“We have yet to determine the bomb found last July and the recent explosion,” Franco admitted. He, however, pointed out the materials used in the two bombs were different.

The police official said that the bomb that caused the explosion was placed in a red sack but have yet to determine the components of the IED.

Although no one was hurt from the explosion, Franco said the blast created a 9.5 inch wide crater that was 1.6-inch deep crater on the pavement and damaged the back windshield and rear bumper of a parked silver Honda Civic (WFY-927) owned by Alezandro Valencia.

The police official said the EID was first discovered by building security  guard Imer Gaduan who was conducting a routine inspection at that time. The guard told police that he saw a red sack measuring 6 inch by 12 inch in the parking lot.

When he saw white smoke starting to come out of the sack, the guard immediately ran away then saw the sack explode as he did so.
