University of the Visayas captured its ninth consecutive crown on Thursday after crushing University of Cebu, 75-62, in the CESAFI basketball championship at the New Cebu City Coliseum.

Rookie Eman Calo starred for the Green Lancers as he fired 21 points while Harold Cincoflores and Ritchum Dennison added 15 and 10 markers, respectively, to make up for Greg Slaughter's disappointing six-point outing.

It was a fitting end to the three-year college career of the 6-foot-11 Slaughter, who also shared the Most Valuable Player honors with rival Junmar Fajardo, the Webmasters' 6-foot-9 star center.

Moncrief Rogado led UC with 13 points in a losing cause while Fajardo was held to just seven points as the squad mentored by ex-Alaska Milk guard Rhoel Gomez failed to force a rubber match.

With the win, UV earned the last outright spot in the Sweet 16 of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League set on Nov 23. They were eliminated last year by University of the East in the first round and lost to Ateneo in the finals two years ago.

The Webmasters, meanwhile, will have to qualify through the zonal phase set Nov. 6-8 in Cebu City.

Competing in that short tourney are UAAP fifth-placer Adamson, NAASCU champion San Sebastian-Cavite and CESAFI third-placer University of San Jose Recoletos.
