UK seeks successful climate talks
With less than two months before the climate change talks in Copenhagen, Denmark in December, British Ambassador Stephen Lillie stressed that the British government will push for an agreement that is “ambitious, effective, and fair” in replacing the Kyoto Protocol.
“The UK is working hard to ensure success. We want an agreement that is ambitious, by limiting warming to two degrees Celsius; an agreement that is effective, by driving investment in clean energy, sustainable forestry and adaptation; and an agreement that is fair, by providing sufficient finance, technology and capacity building for developing countries to take action on both mitigation and adaptation,” Lillie said.
“The world cannot afford failure in Copenhagen. With so many countries vulnerable to climate change, the lives of millions in developing countries are at stake physically and economically,” he added.
A United Nations (UN) climate change conference in Copenhagen, Denmark this December will be held to succeed the Kyoto Protocol, which will end in 2012.
