Cone expects tough matches ahead
Games Wednesday (Araneta Coliseum)
5 p.m. — SMB vs Rain or Shine
7:30 p.m. — Alaska vs Sta. Lucia
Despite a 4-0 start, Alaska coach Tim Cone said it’s too early to get excited and would rather focus on their next assignments in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup.
“The excitement over our start is much ado about nothing, it’s too early to get excited,” said Cone, who is eyeing his 13th league championship.
“We were lucky to get through Ginebra and San Miguel this early.”
The Aces defeated the Beermen, 85-74, and the Kings, 105-92, on top of their wins over Barako Bull (99-83) and Coca-Cola (100-79).
Cone is looking forward to their showdown with defending champion Talk ‘N Text on Nov. 20 at the Araneta Coliseum.
“Tough teams on the horizon, TNT, Sta. Lucia, Purefoods, etc. and there’s a whole second round to go,” he said. “Of course, 4-0 is much better that 2-2 or 0-4, so we’ll take it.”
In observance of the All Saints’ Day, the PBA took a break Saturday in its road game presented by Phoenix Fuel, as well as its regular games yesterday at the Big Dome.
The league resumes on Wednesday as Alaska Milk tries to sustain its clean slate against Sta. Lucia Realty (3-1) at 7:30 p.m., right after the 5 p.m. pitting powerhouse San Miguel (2-2) against winless Rain or Shine (0-4).
The Realtors opened with back-to-back wins, but ran into the powerhouse Tropang Texters (83-100). SLR bounced back against Burger King, 101-93, last Friday.
“It’s a good start for us,” said Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez, who now has his ‘main man’ and 2008 Most Valuable Player (MVP) Kelly Williams back after missing the second half of the Fiesta Cup due to a blood disorder.
Talk ‘N Text and Ginebra share third with similar 2-1 cards.
Their respective wins against the Smart-Gilas national team were nullified after PBA commissioner Renauld “Sonny” Barrios, following a board decision, opted to render the games against the Nationals as no-bearing.
The Texters and the Kings both opened with 2-0 cards, but lost their respective third matches. TNT bowed to the Beermen, 90-100, while Ginebra yielded to the Aces.
Ginebra has been without two key players, former MVP Eric Menk (fractured right pinky toe) and Mark Caguioa (knee).
