Police stay on alert as millions of people return after holidays
Police will still be on heightened alert Tuesday in anticipation of the influx of millions of motorists and commuters to Metro Manila and other key urban areas from their respective provinces after a long weekend.
Chief Supt. Leonardo Espina, spokesman of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said all policemen on duty during All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day were ordered to remain on their posts and be on alert until Tuesday.
“The PNP remains on nationwide heightened alert and is anticipating the surge of motorists and commuters traffic from the provinces back to Metro Manila until tomorrow (Tuesday),” said Espina.
The official explained that the move is to ensure that there will still be a sufficient number of policemen to assist motorists and commuters on their way back to their homes and work sites.
Earlier, the PNP established 4,825 Police Assistance Centers (PAC) in public cemeteries, memorial parks, churches, highways, seaports, bus terminals and resorts in different locations nationwide as part of the PNP's nationwide security and public safety plan for the holidays.
The declaration of heightened alert status on Friday also means that there should at least be 50 percent of the police force in PNP stations across the country.
“Our policemen will remain on their posts, they were ordered to observe the same vigilance to ensure the safety of motorists and commuters,” said Espina.
"We should remain cautious and aware of their surroundings because there is always a possibility of criminal elements who will take advantage of the situation," he added.
Most of the policemen, he said, remain deployed in travel routes and transport terminals to provide security to motorists and commuters as well in various residential areas.
While there were reports of robbery in Parañaque City that resulted in the wounding of at least three people and a shooting incident and explosion in a cemetery in Pateros, Espina said the overall security assessment was generally peaceful.
“The observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day was generally peaceful, our security measures were proven to be effective,” the official said.
