Cheryl Cosim’s attacker still at large
The man who threatened ABS-CBN newscaster Cheryl Cosim with a gun during a traffic altercation last week is still at large.
A team of policemen failed to track down the suspect, identified as a Richard Ordoñez, when they visited his house in Project 6, Quezon City, on Nov. 9 a propos to serving him notice for the revocation of his “license to possess firearms.”
Apparently, Ordoñez was out and his housemates, maintaining ignorance of his whereabouts, refused to accept the notice on his behalf.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Ordoñez has until the weekend to surrender his firearms, after which they will have to obtain a search warrant to retrieve the weapons.
Based on records, Ordoñez has seven firearms with expired licenses.
Superintendent Lino Banaag, head of the Quezon City Police District-Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (QCPD-CIDU), said that Ordoñez has a slim chance of renewing his licenses given the pending cases filed against him.
Earlier, Cosim had filed before the QCPD-CIDU cases of ‘grave threats’ and ‘illegal possession of firearms’ against Ordoñez.
According to Cosim’s statement, she was traversing Congressional Avenue in Quezon City aboard her Mitsubishi Outlander together with four people in the afternoon of Nov. 2 when they were nearly sideswiped by a black Nissan Cefiro.
Upon reaching the corner of Visayas Avenue, a man allegedly got out of the sedan, pointed a gun at them and challenged her group to come out. Cosim and her group stayed inside their vehicle until the man got back in his sedan and sped away.
Cosim was able to copy the Cefiro’s license plate which the police used to determine Ordoñez’s location. A photograph of Ordoñez with the PNP-Firearms and Explosives Division allowed the journalist to positively identify him.
