PSC to file suit vs POC
A day after being sued for P10 million for seven courses of action, the Philippine Sports Commission, headed by Harry Angping, is set to file malversation charges against Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr. and three other officials for failure to liquidate public funds used during the country’s hosting of the Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in 2005.
Angping on Tuesday said they plan to press charges against Cojuangco, who was then the vice-chairman of the Philippine SEAG Organizing Committee (Philsoc).
Also included in the charge sheet are POC secretary-general Steve Hontiveros, treasurer Ernesto Ortiz Luis and deputy secretary-general Jose Capistrano Jr. this Wednesday.
Angping said they have written Phiulsoc several times, explaining that the liquidation of the P73,243,524.86 was disallowed by the Commission on Audit.
“But all we got were letters explaining that we are wrong and that they wouldn’t liquidate,” Angping said.
“All of us have to follow government rules. If the auditor says it is not acceptable, then we have to do something about it. This is not something political,” he added.
The other, Cojuanco’s lawyer Vicente Chuidian, filed seven charges against the PSC chairman, including libel, which stemmed from they called “alleged sudden, unexpected and unlawful oppression demanding the refund within seven days.”
Cojuangco’s counsel is seeking a total P10 million in actual, compensatory, exemplary damages and attorney’s fees.
Angping said he welcomed the POC's action but he has yet to receive any copy of the formal affidavit.
“When I get the paper, I’ll ask my lawyer to answer all the questions,” Angping said.
The PSC had earlier filed charges against Bacolod SEAG Organizing Committee’s head Rep. Monico Puentevella and Cebu SEAG Organizing Committee’s Jonathan Guardo a few months ago.
