Torres, Albania to get rewards for Asian feat

Long jump queen Marestela Torres and boxer Alice Albania stand to get cash rewards from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) for their exploits in Asian-level tournaments.

This was announced Thursday by Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Harry Angping before his departure to Vancouver, Canada.

"The PSC will give them incentives for bringing honor to the country," Angping said.

Albania came home with the country's lone gold medal in the Asian Indoor Games while Torres ended the country's 22-year-old gold medal drought in the Asian championships by capturing the women's long jump.

Both athletes will see action in the Southeast Asian Games next month in Laos.

Angping cited Torres and Albania for their dedication and discipline.

"Torres is one very dedicated athlete who trains religiously at Rizal (Memorial track oval). I see her when I'm doing my walk," Angping said.

The incentives are in line with the PSC's commitment to reward athletes who perform well in international competitions.

Paul Vega, head of the PSC legal department, said the Asian tournaments that Torres and Albania have taken part are not covered by law that grants incentives to athletes, but the PSC is going out of its way to reward them for their feats.

"This is the PSC's way of motivating our athletes," Vega said, adding the amount would be discussed upon the return of Angping on Wednesday.

Meantime, Angping took exceptions to reports that the PSC arbitrarily turned down the request of the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA) for assistance with regard to the athletes' stint in the Asian championships.

"PATAFA requested assistance for 17 athletes which was obviously bloated and unacceptable. Then they came back asking support for five athletes which came too late," Angping said.
