Despite the threat of being impeached, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) is standing by its decision to reject the petition of "Ang Ladlad" for party-list accreditation.

“We won’t change our mind just because they threatened to impeach me. Mahirap yung nagsasalita eh hindi naman kayang gawin,” Comelec Commissioner Nicodemo Ferrer said in an interview.

He said he is not all bothered with the impeachment threat saying he would even help the group draft the case.

“I welcome that… kung gusto nila pumunta sila sa Supreme Court. They can do that. Nobody’s preventing them,” said Ferrer.

“I’ll even help them make a draft of the impeachment,” he added.

On Sunday, AKBAYAN Rep. Risa Hontiveros said the Comelec committed a constitutional violation when it used religion as basis for rejecting Ang Ladlad’s petition.

“By using religion as a basis to reject Ang Ladlad’s accreditation, they have crossed the constitutional boundary between the state and religion. For that alone, they can be impeached,” Rep. Hontiveros said in a statement.

But Ferrer, head of the Comelec’s Second Division, defended their use of the Bible and Koran in their decision.

“We use the Bible and Koran to guide us in what is morally right and wrong. Maybe they are using another guideline. It’s a free country,” he said.

On Thursday, the Comelec rejected the petition for accreditation of the gay and lesbian group Ang Ladlad due to moral grounds.
