Carrie Underwood takes the wheel in US chart

“American Idol” fourth season winner Carrie Underwood takes the number one spot in the Billboard album chart this week with the release of her brand new CD, “Play On.”

Underwood also takes the best selling title for a female artist in 2009 by posting sales of 318,000 units of her new album.

Carrie Underwood rocketed to the top of pop and country music when she released her debut album “Some Hearts” which has her signature hit, “Jesus Takes The Wheel.”

She won the Grammy Awards for “Best New Artist” and later, three “Best Female Country Vocal Performance” Grammys in a row (2006-2008) for her next albums.

Meanwhile, in the UK, “X-Factor” finalist JLS tops the singles chart with “Everybody In Love” while Cheryl Cole, an “X-Factor” celebrity judge, maintains her hold on the album charts with “3 Words.”

In the US singles chart this week, techno pop act Owl City wrests back the number one spot with their single, “Fireflies,” from Jason Derulo’s “Whatcha Say” which slides down to number three. Jay Z is up two notches with “Empire State Of Mind” to number two.

Iyaz debuts in the Top 10 singles chart with her single “Replay” at number four while Jay Sean’s “Down” goes down a notch and finishes at number five.

Miley Cyrus loses a step but still remains in the singles chart with “Party In The U.S.A.” at number six. Same goes with Lady Gaga who stumbles down a notch with “Paparazzi,” landing at number seven.

Britney Spears maintains the number eight spot with “3,” while Rihanna debuts her new single “Russian Roulette” at number nine.

Beyonce closes this week’s singles chart with “Sweet Dreams” sitting at number 10.
