Arcilla, Arevalo in semis
Four-time champion Czarina Mae Arevalo and men’s defending champion Johnny Arcilla posted contrasting victories on Thursday to barge into the semifinals of the Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) at the PCA claycourts in Paco, Manila.
The fifth-picked Arevalo, who won her last crown in 2007, stunned third seed Aileen Rogan, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, while the top-seeded Arcilla clobbered No. 8 Rocky Paglalunan, 6-1, 6-3, in the P500,000 tournament.
Arevalo, who settled for a runner-up finish last year, will face either defending champion Bambi Zoleta or eighth seed Anna Clarice Patrimonio.
Arcilla, for his part, awaits the winner between top junior netter Francis Casey Alcantara and third seed Elbert Anasta.
Patrimonio’s older sister, the top-seeded Anna Christine, also cruised to the semis with an easy 6-3, 6-1 victory over No. 7 Regina Santiago.
The elder Patrimonio, who lost to Arevalo in last year’s semis match, tangles with sixth seed Jessica Agra, who shocked No. 4 Michelle Pang, 6-3, 6-7 (8), 6-3.
Patrick John Tierro, last year’s runner-up, also earned a semis berth by blasting fifth pick Ralph Kevin Barte, 6-3, 6-3.
The second-seeded Tierro, a veteran Davis Cupper, will meet either Mark Reyes or sixth pick Rolando Ruel Jr. in the other semis pairing.
