Bongbong to Noynoy: Beware of Ramos endorsement

Being on the receiving end of many endorsements from various personalities and groups, presidential aspirant Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III has been advised against being endorsed by those with “destroyed credibility” like former President Fidel V. Ramos.

The unsolicited advice came from an unlikely source — Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., the only son of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos and former First Lady Imelda Marcos.

According to Bongbong, an endorsement from Ramos could put Noynoy’s candidacy at risk given the former president’s “terrible reputation.”

It is understandable that Bongbong would have some animosity toward Ramos because of the role the latter played during the 1987 People Power Revolution that toppled the Marcos regime.

Cousin of the older Marcos, Ramos, on February 22, 1986, withdrew his loyalty from the then president and joined the rebels at Camp Aguinaldo. His defection turned the tide in favor of the rebellion and deprived Marcos of loyal troops.

In a statement, Bongbong said Ramos can be considered a liability or burden to Aquino because of his involvement in numerous scams such as the alleged anomalous multi-billion-peso independent power producers (IPP) contracts, the scandal-rocked Public Estate Authority-Amari deal and the Centennial Expo and Smokey Mountain controversies.

“His (Ramos’) endorsement can be considered a kiss of death. I pity the presidential candidate who will be endorsed by FVR,” he said. Besides Aquino, Marcos also gave the same “friendly advice” to Lakas-Kampi standard- bearer Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro Jr.

He urged Teodoro to decline a possible endorsement by Ramos; otherwise, he said, the administration candidate will continue to lag behind presidential surveys.
