Pacman snubbed in Sarangani?
He has charmed fans from all over the globe—a big star used to receiving lavish praise and boisterous cheer wherever he goes.
Still, it seems that Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao’s allure is yet to rub off on officials of Sarangani province. According to the handlers of the pound-for-pound king, local officials of the province blatantly snubbed the boxer during his recent visit.
Pacquiao’s camp decried the apparent lack of welcome banners in and around the area vis-a-vis the seeming absence of the officials—all of which didn’t bother to show up to receive the world renowned boxer—when he addressed fans and media at the town plaza.
One of Pacquiao’s advisers, Minvelez Gulle, said the Sarangani official’s apparent disregard for the boxer’s recent achievement is testament to a dearth in political finesse and maturity.
This was refuted by Governor Miguel Dominguez who blamed the brouhaha on the “lack of coordination” between the local government and Pacquiao’s people.
That said, the governor was candid enough to admit that Sarangani “traditionally” never gives Pacquiao a grand welcome citing the distance of the province from the airport, which is located in General Santos City.
Pacquiao, who hails from General Santos City, has transferred his residence to Sarangani—birthplace of his wife Jinkee. He has declared his intention to run for a congressional seat in the province against billionaire Roy Chiongbian, youngest son of the late Congressman James L. Chiongbian..
Chiongbian, a Lakas-Kampi-CMD member, is on his third and final term and reportedly intends to have one of his relatives run in his place next year.
The Chiongbians have ruled the province since 1992.
Pacquiao failed in his first attempt to run for Congress out of South Cotabato as a Liberal Party member in 2004.
