Alcantara Advances; Patrimonio sisters win
Top seed Francis Casey Alcantara and the Patrimonios – including birthday girl, Anna Clarice – bested their respective rivals to advance to the second round in the rain-delayed Phinma International Juniors Week at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Out to retain his title, Alcantara thumped Chinese Tao Jun Nan, 6-2, 6-2, last Tuesday, to lead the charge of the favorites in the Grade 4 tournament.
Anna Clarice struggled early but went on to celebrate her 16th birthday with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Japanese qualifier Sari Baba.
Patrimonio’s victory arranged her a second-round date with sixth seed Trang Huynh Phuong Dai of Vietnam, who whipped Israeli Rona Lavian, 6-3, 6-1.
Her elder sister, Anna Christine, also marched into the next phase Tuesday with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Riko Sawayanagi of Japan to keep the country’s hopes alive.
The Patrimonios are the country’s remaining bets in the girls’ side after three other RP bets bombed out in the first round.
Also advancing to the next round was Leander Lazaro, who recovered from a second set melt down to beat German Louis Donczyk, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
