Galera police chief sacked
Seven people, including four foreigners, were injured after gunshots were heard following a scuffle between a rookie policeman and a group of tourists in Puerto Galera in Mindoro Oriental on Friday night, police said Saturday.
The incident resulted in the relief of Superintendent Roger James Brillantes as chief of police of Puerto Galera Police Station, and the investigation of seven of his men after four of the victims suffered bullet wounds.
A report reaching Camp Crame in Quezon City identified the victims as American John Grhim, 45, who has bullet wound in the right foot; Korean Kim Myung Hoon, 38, who was hit in the right thigh; Australian Paul Andrew Jones, 57, who was hit in the right foot; Ruel Sotto, 28, who as hit in the right thigh; Korean Hoseung Kim, 34 and Analiza Alva, 21, who were both injured from broken glasses and Police Officer 1 Helmero Ondevilla, who suffered contusions and head injuries.
Brillantes was at the opening of the Hammer Head KTV Bar and Disco in Barangay Sabang when Ondevilla figured in a scuffle with a group of foreigner customers at around 11 p.m. on Friday.
A few minutes later, the foreigners were seen trying to wrest control of the service firearm of Ondevilla. The gun went off several times that resulted in the wounding of four people.
Police are now investigating who fired the gun.
Brillantes and seven of his men identified as PO3 Reynald Tolentino, PO2 Adel Pacanot, PO1 John Paul Canales, PO1 Rommel Lazo, PO1 Benjie Palasigue, PO1 Gorry Alabastro and Ondevilla were subjected to investigation as witnesses allegedly spotted them at the scene.
“The issued firearms of the police personnel of Puerto Galera who were being linked by witnesses and those who responded in the areas were subjected to ballistic examination. They were also subjected to paraffin tests,” a police report said.
