Bid to divide Bacolod backed
BACOLOD CITY (PNA) — Bacolod congressional bet Anthony Golez said he supports the redistricting proposal of Bacolod City now pending in the House of Congress.
If he gets elected, Golez said he would go in any way that could benefit the City of Bacolod.
He opined that redistricting Bacolod is more beneficial for the Bacolodnons.
“Double is always better in single, especially in terms of projects and finance,” he said.
Golez is running under the party, GOBINGTHA (Anthony GOlez, BING Leonardia, and THAddy Sayson, who are running for congressman, mayor and vice mayor respectively in the 2010 elections.
The bid to split Bacolod City into two districts was initiated by Councilor Alex Paglumotan, who chairs the City Council’s Special Committee for Redistricting. He said the City was long overdue to have two congressional districts.
Paglumotan said that the City is qualified for redistricting because it has surpassed the required number of residents, that is, more than 500,000. Based on documents prepared by the Bacolod City Planning and Development Office, the barangays that will fall under the proposed North District are 1 to 9, 17 to 27, Alangilan, Banago, Bata, Estefania, Granada, Mandalagan, Mansilingan, Villamonte and Vista Alegre.
Those that will fall under the South District are barangays 10 to 16, 28 to 41, Alijis, Cabug, Felisa, Handumanan, Pahanocoy, Punta Taytay, Singcang, Sum-ag Taculing and Tangub.
Senator Miguel Zubiri has also expressed support for the creation of additional congressional districts nationwide.
He said the proposals to split the cities of Bacolod, Iloilo, Iligan, Novaliches and Cavite are needed due to the growing population of these areas. “Adding the number of congressmen in the country is a basic fundamental issue but it still has to undergo a long tedious process before anything else. It's up to Congress to pass it in the House and in the Senate" said the S0020enator.
