UST spikers shoot for V-League title this Tuesday

Games Tuesday (The Arena, San Juan)
2 p.m. — San Sebastian vs FEU
4 p.m. — UST vs Adamson
University of Santo Tomas hopes to write a new chapter in the Shakey’s V-League history as it guns for a record fifth title against Adamson University this Tuesday in Game Two of their best-of-three title showdown at The Arena in San Juan City.
After taking Game 1, 25-15, 19-25, 25-22, 25-21, the Tigresses have the chance to become the first team to win back-to-back championships when they clash 4 p.m.
UST actually holds the distinction of having the most number of titles with four, and snaring another one today will just further cement its already established status as the most dominant squad in the tournament.
De La Salle, which has been banned indefinitely from playing in the league after skipping the past two conferences, has three titles.
To spoil UST’s celebration today, Adamson needs an extra ordinary effort.
In the Tigresses’ four title conquest, they have won three championships by taking Game One of the series.
UST had won the title via a come-from-behind fashion once when it beat San Sebastian in the second conference of the fourth season.
Clashing in the opener at 2 p.m. are dethroned champion San Sebastian and Far Eastern University, which is bidding to sweep the SSC lasses in their own best-of-three affair for third.
The Lady Tams won Game One, 25-22, 25-13, 20-25, 12-25, 15-13.
Adamson, looking for its second title after snaring the crown at the expense of Ateneo in last year’s first conference, should raise its game several notches to extend the series with a rubber match set on Friday at the same venue.
To do that, however, they must play solidly and consistently from both ends of the floor, something they failed to do in the series opener last Sunday.
They must also limit UST’s awesome threesome of Aiza Maizo, rookie Maru Banaticla and Angeli Tabaquero.
The three did most of the damage the last time out by combining for 49 of UST’s total 94 hits.
Aside from that, the Lady Falcons, who stormed to the finals by sweeping the SSC lasses, must also tear down UST’s defensive wall, which rendered their offensive thrust toothless time and again.
UST posted an impressive 21 blocks, 11 of which were shared by skipper Maizo and Maika Ortiz.
“We still need to further raise the level of our game if we want to win again,” UST coach Shaq delos Santos said.
