Atienza seeks mayoralty anew
Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Jose Atienza Jr. filed on Tuesday his certificate of candidacy (CoC) for mayor of Manila under the Buhayin ang Maynila ticket.
After attending a thanksgiving mass at the Quiapo Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Atienza -- together with his vice mayoralty candidate Bonjay Isip-Garcia and councilors -- filed his candidacy at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) local office on Arroceros St. in Manila.
The complete list of candidates under the Buhayin ang Maynila ticket include: for District 1 Councilors – Dennis Alcoreza, Edwin Simbulan, Eduardo Solis, Danny Isiderio, and German Nuñez; for District 2 Councilors – Marlon Lacson, Numero Uno Lim, Ivy Varona, Boy Laxa, Nida Buenaventura-Panti, and Ike Hernandez Villegas; Letlet Zarcal for District 3 Congressman; for District 3 Councilors – Joel Chua, Ramon Morales, Larsil Silva, Robbie Oca, Don Neil Dela Peña, and Alejandro Gomez; for District 4 Councilors – Gerino Tolentino, Jocelyn Quintos, Susan Beltran, DJ Bagatsing, Caloy Trinidad, and Robin Aquino Padilla; Amado Bagatsing for district 5 Congressman; for district 5 Councilors – Cora Gernale, Cristy Isip, Rafael Borromeo, Robert Ortega, Joey Cabreza, and Harry Huecas; Benny Abante for district 6 Congressman; and for District 6 Councilors – Joy Dawis-Asuncion, Joey Uy, Caloy Castañeda, Vladimir Cabigao, and Casimiro Sison.
Atienza will be pitted against re-electionist Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim and former Philippine National Police chief Avelino Razon Jr., who earlier declared his intention to run for Manila mayor next year.
Atienza served for three consecutive terms as chief executive of Manila from 1998 to 2007, after which he was appointed as secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
In a statement, Atienza said he was compelled to run again for a government post due to “the present administration’s total neglect of the city and its residents.”
Atienza formed his own political ticket due to a standing feud against Liberal Party (LP) colleagues. He had been an LP member since the 1970s.
