Globe showcasing GCASH at Mobile Money Summit

With mobile payments becoming the norm among 3.8 percent of all cellular phone users in Asia Pacific by 2012, Globe Telecom is showcasing how its mobile money business works to at least 50 foreign delegates of the Mobile Money Transfer Asia-Pacific Summit next week.

Globe’s wholly-owned subsidiary, G-Xchange, Inc., was one of the world’s first mobile money issuers. Currently, its micro payment service, Globe GCASH, transforms the mobile phones of1.2 million registered users into virtual wallets, posting a transaction volume of about P5 billion a month.

Subscribers use mobile money transfers for cross border remittances, domestic transfers, airtime top-up, utility bill and school fee payment, salary disbursements and micro credit loan repayments, among others.

Next week's Mobile Money Transfer Asia-Pacific Summit is expected to attract over 200 delegates from all over the world as telecom companies, banks, microfinance industries, and technology developers realize the huge opportunities in mobile money transfer.

After the Summit, at least half a hundred delegates who registered for the site visit will drop by at the Globe headquarters in Mandaluyong City to see how its GCash business operate on a daily basis, according to Rizza Maniego-Eala, GXI President.

After a tour of the GXI set up, the delegates will be briefed about the strengths of being a mobile money issuer subsidiary, the security features of the service as well as the mobile money strategies that work for customers, large and small merchants, utility companies, banks and micro finance partners.

The participants will be also be given a chance to assume the role of the consumer. They will be brought to a rural bank to load their GCASH mobile wallet and will be transported to a popular shopping center where they can use GCASH to buy goods.
