UAAP, NCAA champs shoot for semis berths
Games Friday (Ynares Sports Arena)
2 p.m. — Ateneo vs UST
4 p.m. — San Sebastian vs Letran
The champions of the UAAP and NCAA go for spots in the Final Four when they battle separate opponents this Friday in the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Champions League at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
In a rematch of the UAAP Final Four, Ateneo battles University of Santo Tomas in the first game at 2 p.m. before NCAA champion San Sebastian takes on Letran in the second game at 4 p.m.
Already in the Final Four are NCAA runner-up San Beda and UAAP third-placer Far Eastern University after hurdling their respective foes last Wednesday.
The Red Lions outlasted Mapua, 77-75, while the Tamaraws pulled off a stirring 86-85 win over UAAP Final Four tormentor University of the East.
Ateneo earned its way in this Elite Eight by trouncing ISAA champion Lyceum, 73-63, while San Sebastian needed five extra minutes to survive past unheralded University of San Carlos, 76-68, in a game held in Ormoc City.
The Tigers, meanwhile, defeated Jose Rizal University, 64-62, also in Ormoc while the Knights, powered by a spectacular 36-point, 10-three-pointer performance from Jaypee Belencion, dethroned La Salle, 83-72.
In the Ateneo-UST clash, both teams will most likely play minus their star players Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Dylan Ababou because of their commitments with the Smart Gilas RP team.
The Knights will likewise play minus RJ Jazul because of the same reason, making it hard for them to defeat the intact Stags lineup led by Jimbo Aquino and Calvin Abueva.
