March fight date risky — Roach

Freddie Roach is a bit wary about plans to pit Manny Pacquiao with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on March 13, 2010.

From London where he is busy preparing British rising star Amir Khan for a fight this weekend, Roach told the Los Angeles Times that while he is drooling over a Mayweather bout next year, the date being eyed by Top Rank chief Bob Arum is too close.

“March 13 is too fast a turnaround,” Roach told fight scribe Lance Pugmire. “Manny has a broken (right) eardrum (suffered in the Miguel Cotto fight last November 14 in Las Vegas).”

If only he has his way, Roach would like Pacquiao to take a breather before engaging the cagey Mayweather in what is being billed as one of the richest fights ever.

“I’d like to have more time. I hope the fight happens, yes, but I want us to be in the best possible shape,” said Roach.

If ever a fight is held in March 2010, Pacquiao has to report for training camp – wherever it is – by the second week of January.

Arum arrived in the country Thursday morning from Las Vegas and the soon-to-be 78-year-old Hall of Fame promoter is all set to meet with Pacquiao regarding his plans for next year considering that the Filipino pound-for-pound king is running for public office.

Arum reportedly has in his possession documents showing that Mayweather has agreed to fight Pacquiao although Arum refuses to provide details until he personally speaks with Pacquiao.

Wakee Salud, a key Pacquiao adviser, said there’ll be no catch weight in the event Pacquiao and Mayweather come to terms for their super fight.

“The fight will be at 147 lbs,” said Salud.
