Ateneo and University of the East bested separate rivals Sunday as the 72nd UAAP women’s volleyball tournament unfurled at The Arena in San Juan.

Behind a fiery 23-point output from Angeline Gervacio, the Lady Eagles trounced University of the Philippines, 25-20, 25-16, 25-20, while the Lady Warriors repulsed National University, 25-13, 16-25, 25-19, 16-25, 15-12.

In men’s action, University of Santo Tomas defeated La Salle, 25-8, 25-15, 23-25, 25-16, to open its bid for a third straight crown. Henry Pecana led the way for the Tigers with 17 points while John Paul Torres added 15.

Last season’s runner-up University of the Philippines defeated Ateneo, 25-19, 25-21, 25-20, as Dominico Lucindo and Michael Jordan Arda each tallied 10 points in the win.
