Que faces tough challenge in RP Open

Angelo Que is determined to win his second straight title but a slew of challengers, led by past champions Cassius Casas and Frankie Miñoza, are out to spoil his party when the 93rd Philippine Open starts on December 16 at the Mount Malarayat Golf and Country Club’s Mt. Malipunyo and Mt. Lobo courses.

Casas triumphed in 2001 but has since been luckless in the last six RP Open tournaments.

But the Davao City-born shotmaker has prepared hard for the P2.5 million tournament as he’s aching to revive his once flourishing career.

Casas, who defeated Australian David Gleeson for title, is currently working on his new swing, which he said, will be the key to his success. He’ll know if his new style will be effective as he competes in Canlubang for the last leg of the ICTSI-RP Golf Tour this week.

“I’ve got my swing checked and corrected. This will be a good chance for me to show to my fellow pros that I can still compete at a high-level,” said Casas, who won the B-Ing Championship in the Mercedes-Benz Tour in 2008.

The champion in the event put up by the National Golf Association of the Philippines (NGAP) through president Leandro Mendoza gets the top purse of P410,000.

The event is presented by Aboitiz, San Miguel Corp. and Stradcom in partnership with Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. and Jorgman Construction and Dev. Corp. Miñoza hopes to defy ‘Father Time’ anew as he seeks his second title since winning two years ago.

Other top contenders are Artemio Murakami, Juvic Pagunsan, Antonio Lascuna, and Mars Pucay, who are all expected to join next week’s festivities which kicks off with the pro-am on December 15.
