Abu kidnaps Basilan State College vice president
ISABELA CITY, Basilan Province (December 10, 2009) – Suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) kidnapped the vice president of a government run state college in this city, shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday, a day after rebels beheaded one of their captives they recently kidnapped in Maluso, Basilan.
Basilan Vice Governor Al-Rasheed Sakalahul said Thursday four gunmen barged inside the house of Engineer Orlando Fajardo, vice president of the Basilan State College in Isabela City and seized him about 7:30 pm, Thursday.
The attack occurred just a day after suspected ASG militant group beheaded one of the three captives they kidnapped from the Hi-tech Plywood factory on Nov.10 in Maluso, Basilan.
"This is really bad. The situation is getting worse now. The gunmen took Fajardo from his home in a heavy populated area in Isabela City. We have alerted the police and military authorities about this latest kidnapping,” Sakalahul said.
Kidnappers have beheaded on Wednesday Mark Singson a plywood factory worker after his employer failed to pay some P1.5 million initially demanded by the ASG.
Singson was kidnapped along with two Chinese men - Michael Tan, 27, and Oscar Lu, 51 – whose fate is still unknown until now.
The two foreigners were previously reported to be Filipino citizens, but police said they are Chinese nationals and probably illegal workers hired by George Tan, owner of the Hi-tech Wood Craft Corporation in Maluso town.
“The kidnappers beheaded the hostage after the factory owner failed to pay some P1.5 million they initially demanded,” Sakalahul said.
Last month, the ASG also beheaded Gabriel Canizares, a school principal of an elementary school in Patikul, Sulu, after his family reportedly failed to raise P2 million for his safe release. His head was dumped and found near a gasoline station in Jolo, Sulu.
