A group of unidentified armed men Thursday night ambushed a military and police convoy transporting to General Santos City the high-powered firearms and ammunition that were seized from the mansions and other properties of the Ampatuans in Maguindanao.

Reports reaching Camp Aguinaldo showed the incident occured at around 7:30 p.m. at Lapu-Lapu village in Ampatuan town.

The government forces were reportedly in a convoy of six-vehicles loaded with the high-powered firearms and assorted ammunition seized during a series of raids at different Ampatuan properties when they were attacked. The convoy was headed towards General Santos City.

No one was hurt in the ambush but the sixth vehicle of their convoy was hit with bullets.

A hand grenade was also thrown by the armed men.

P/Supt. Felicisimo Khu, was quoted as saying, "Buti na lang at hindi sumabog, we are still here in the area, and reinforcement will come."  Khu heads the Task Force Alpha which is investigating the Maguindanao massacre crime scene.

Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) spokesperson, Maj. Randolph Cabangbang said, "We still have no suspects but they could be supporters of the Ampatuans."

"Maybe they want to project that the Ampatuans still have supporters. We dont know know why they would do that," he added.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesperson, on the other hand, said "it was a very short (burst of gunfire)...nanggugulo lang sila."

Khu, who was on board one of the vehicles in the convoy, refused to say whether the campaign against the Ampatuans and their armed men has something to do with the attack.
