International-acclaimed TIME magazine recognized the heroism of an 18-year-old Filipino construction worker, who lost his life saving the lives of relatives and neighbors during storm Ondoy, which ravaged Philippines with massive city flooding.

Muelmar Magallanes, of Barangay Bagong Silangan, Quezon City, saved the lives of at least 30 persons trapped in their rooftops when the river near where he lived swelled and engulfed the houses in the area with powerful sweeping water currents.

On his last attempt to save the life of his neighbor, Menchu Peñalosa and her six-month-old baby girl placed on a Styrofoam makeshift raft, Magallanes finally succumbed to fatigue and was swept by the strong current. Magallane’s body was found the next day, while Peñalosa and her daughter survived the ordeal.

Magallanes received a slot in TIME’s TOP Ten Heroes list together with Captain Chesley Sullenberger American Air force pilot, who saved the lives of the 155 passengers of his airplane and Sultan Munadi, an Afghan journalist who died in the line of duty.

Magallanes is the second of Filipino who recently gained international recognition after Efren Peñaflorida won the CNN Hero of the Year award.
